The Lurran Archaeological Society
(LAS) — Commonly referred to simply as "the Society."
Overview
The Lurran Archaeological Society is the foremost scientific organization dedicated to the discovery, preservation, and study of extraterrestrial archaeological sites, extinct civilizations, and pre-Consortium history throughout known space. Founded in 2318, the Society has become one of the Lurran Consortium's most respected civilian institutions, employing thousands of archaeologists, historians, linguists, xenobiologists, geologists, engineers, and cultural specialists.
Unlike KAVOE, whose mandate centers on security and defense, the Society seeks to answer a different question:
"Who came before us?"
Membership is considered one of the greatest academic achievements in the Consortium. Competition for field assignments is intense, and Society archaeologists are frequently treated with the same admiration afforded to KAVOE officers.

Kepler-186f — The Society's headquarters are located on Kepler-186f, one of the Consortium's oldest and most respected colonial worlds. The headquarters complex contains:

Primary Objectives
Major Research Interests
Kelnorii
The Society's largest research division. Thousands of expeditions have attempted to reconstruct the civilization's history. Only a tiny fraction of Kelnorii writing has been translated.
Balequos
Little is known. Most discoveries consist of damaged orbital facilities.
Lak-Zon 177
Ancient machine civilization. Many researchers question whether they truly became extinct.
Nyokai Origins
One of the Society's most controversial research programs. KAVOE heavily restricts information due to national security concerns.
Velkth History
The Society has spent centuries attempting to verify rumors of the Velkth's original homeworld. The effort has produced very little.
Relationship with the Velkth
Perhaps no relationship is more frustrating. The Velkth acknowledge that the Society performs important work. However:
- •Requests for historical documents are frequently denied.
- •Access applications often require years.
- •Entire expeditions have waited decades for approval.
- •Some records are released only after unanimous approval by Velkth elders.
- •Certain archives remain permanently sealed.
Even so, Velkth observers are commonly seen watching Society excavations from a distance. They almost never interfere. Occasionally, a Velkth quietly points researchers toward an overlooked ruin — or silently departs after determining they are not yet ready to uncover what lies beneath.
Many archaeologists joke: "If a Velkth shows up, you've found something important."
Operational Hurdles
Funding
Although heavily supported by the Consortium government, many expeditions also receive funding from:

Dangerous Environments
Ruins are frequently located on worlds featuring:

Hostile Civilizations
The Society is officially non-military. Unfortunately, archaeology often places expeditions in dangerous territory. Common threats include:
Nyokai
Hostile Nyokai factions frequently destroy archaeological evidence before it can be examined. Some researchers believe they intentionally erase evidence of their ancient activities.
Ruvanphodenaelushenosk ("Nosk")
The Nosk often attack survey teams operating near their territory. Reasons remain unclear. Some believe they consider ancient ruins sacred. Others believe they fear what archaeologists might discover.
Security
Because Society personnel are civilians, security is usually provided by:

High-risk expeditions rarely proceed without armed protection.
