SPECIES · THE ZELMOK MERCHANT COALITION
Zelmok
Master Merchants of Yrluzia
The Zelmoks are one of the oldest and most respected civilizations known to the Lurran Consortium. Native to Yrluzia in the TRAPPIST star system, they are recognized throughout explored space as master merchants, logisticians, engineers, and builders. Their skin is naturally rough and usually shades of brown, they lack external earlobes, and their hearing is comparatively poor. Despite a relatively short lifespan — rarely exceeding thirty standard years — their ability to regenerate damaged tissue rivals that of Earth's salamander, allowing them to recover from severe injuries that would permanently disable most species.

CIVILIZATION
Society
Modern Zelmok civilization places extraordinary importance on honor, contracts, reliability, and reputation. Their societies believe that prosperity comes from keeping one's word rather than seeking conquest.
Thousands of years ago, after centuries of devastating conflict, the Zelmoks abolished organized warfare between themselves. Today, disputes are almost always settled through negotiation, arbitration, or commercial pressure rather than violence.
Ironically, they still maintain powerful defensive militaries.
There are two independent Zelmok governments, both generally peaceful and closely allied. Together they administer at least seven inhabited planets and more than ninety-three terraformed moons, making the Zelmoks one of the largest non-human political powers known to humanity.
THE TRAYARB CEREMONY
Oral Tradition
Although they mature quickly, every generation is expected to preserve the knowledge of the previous one. During the annual Trayarb Ceremony, every son and daughter publicly:
- recite the history of their family
- preserve the knowledge of the previous generation
- keep oral tradition as important as written records
A skilled elder can recount dozens of generations of ancestry, commercial agreements, and historical events entirely from memory.
THE SEXES
Men and Women
Unlike humans, traditional Zelmok society developed around pronounced differences between the sexes.
Females are generally larger, stronger, and more physically imposing than males. In ancient tribal societies they served as hunters, protectors, and warriors. That tradition continues today, with females commonly serving as admirals, generals, warship captains, security commanders, and military instructors.
Males traditionally became caretakers, scholars, merchants, engineers, economists, scientists, and diplomats. Their exceptional memories and numerical reasoning make them particularly suited to business and long-term commercial planning.
Although these traditions remain influential, modern Zelmok society allows individuals of either sex to pursue virtually any profession.
ENGINEERING
Technology
Yrluzia possesses relatively little surface water compared to Earth. As a result, the Zelmoks became masters of mining, industrial manufacturing, orbital engineering, and infrastructure, while humans became experts in ocean engineering.
One of the greatest commercial agreements in interstellar history occurred in 2295, when the Zelmoks introduced humanity to rhosvenolyte, a remarkable structural material that allows metals to remain transparent without sacrificing strength. In return, humanity transferred centuries of expertise in floating cities, underwater habitats, desalination systems, and large-scale ocean colonization.
The exchange transformed both civilizations.
ARTIFICIAL METAMATERIAL
Rhosvenolyte
Rhosvenolyte is an artificial crystalline metallic metamaterial discovered approximately 1700 B.C. on Yrluzia, and introduced to humanity in 2295 A.D. by the Zelmok Merchant Coalition under the Treaty of Talaris.
In exchange for the manufacturing process of rhosvenolyte, the Terran Commonwealth transferred several centuries of accumulated ocean-colonization technology — including floating arcologies, abyssal construction methods, high-pressure habitats, desalination megaplants, hurricane-resistant engineering, and autonomous underwater maintenance systems.
Although humans viewed oceans as obstacles that eventually became cities, the Zelmoks viewed oceans as an untapped frontier. Their worlds possess relatively little surface water, making Terran engineering uniquely valuable. The exchange remains one of the most successful commercial agreements in interstellar history.

Radiation Resistance
Outstanding
Its crystal lattice naturally scatters high-energy particles — excellent for long-duration space habitats.
THE REMARKABLE FEATURE
Optical Properties
The remarkable feature of rhosvenolyte is that it behaves mechanically like a metal while behaving optically like glass. It can be manufactured with transparency levels ranging from fully opaque to nearly perfectly clear.
Unlike glass, transparency does not reduce strength.
THE PROCESS
Manufacturing
Raw rhosvenolyte ore is dull gray and relatively common on several Zelmok worlds. Its value comes from purification.
During manufacturing, billions of microscopic crystal domains are aligned using controlled magnetic resonance fields. Even a deviation of 0.00002° can produce visible optical distortion.
As a result, only a handful of worlds possess foundries capable of producing high-grade structural rhosvenolyte.
THE BREAKTHROUGH
Why Humans Wanted It
Before First Contact, humanity generally faced a choice:
- Strong metals were opaque.
- Transparent materials were fragile.
- Large observation windows represented structural weaknesses.
Rhosvenolyte eliminated that compromise.

THE CONTROVERSY
Intelligence & Covert Operations
Although rhosvenolyte is transparent, it reflects only a tiny fraction of visible light. Advanced coatings make it extremely difficult to detect. Applications include:
Some intelligence agencies even construct “empty rooms” whose true dimensions are concealed by transparent structural partitions.

THE PRICE
Cost
High-quality structural rhosvenolyte costs roughly 18 to 25 times as much as military titanium.
Despite this, demand has exceeded supply for nearly two centuries.
WHAT IT MEANS
Cultural Significance
Among Zelmoks, rhosvenolyte symbolizes honesty. Traditional Zelmok architecture incorporates transparent structural beams to represent that a prosperous society should have “nothing worth hiding.”
Humans interpreted the material very differently. To Terrans, rhosvenolyte became a symbol of prestige, wealth, and technological sophistication. Buildings that prominently feature it are often described as “wearing their engineering instead of hiding it.”
Ironically, intelligence agencies later turned the same material into one of the galaxy's most effective surveillance tools — a contradiction that many Zelmoks find deeply amusing.
Humanity's first instinct upon receiving a material that represented openness was to figure out how to hide behind it.
That observation has become a favorite Zelmok joke at trade conferences.
THE GIANTS
Major Corporations
Shervozielk Von Thyne
The largest Zelmok manufacturer of industrial materials and advanced structural components — refined alloys, construction composites, rhosvenolyte products, heavy manufacturing equipment, and specialized engineering materials used throughout Consortium space. Its products are commonly found in orbital stations, luxury starships, shipyards, mining installations, and planetary megastructures.
Reloveirnth Ven Donnus
One of the largest resource extraction corporations in known space. The company specializes in asteroid mining, comet harvesting, planetary mining, fossil fuel extraction, rare mineral recovery, and orbital refining. Entire colonies depend upon it for strategic resources, making it one of the Consortium's most important commercial partners.
FAITH
Religion
Unlike many civilizations, the Zelmoks have never unified under a single religion. Most belong to one of seven major faiths, each emphasizing different philosophies concerning family, honor, duty, and one's relationship with the universe.
A minority worship Sharra Zul'Elkoen, believing her actions against the Nyokai fulfilled ancient prophecies concerning a protector of intelligent life.
Even more unusual is a growing movement of Zelmok Christians. These believers teach that Jesus Christ was actually a Zelmok named Bralus, who traveled to Earth thousands of years ago. They point to striking similarities between the traditional stories of Bralus and Jesus, arguing that humanity preserved the account under a different name. Mainstream Christianity rejects this interpretation, but the movement continues to grow on several Zelmok worlds.
THE OLD WAYS
The Traditionalists
Not all Zelmoks embrace modern technology. Small communities deliberately reject advanced machinery in a manner somewhat reminiscent of Earth's Amish. These settlements exist on several worlds, living simple agricultural lives while preserving ancient customs.
They believe modern society has become spiritually dependent upon technology and often claim they have remained "genetically pure" by avoiding extensive genetic modification, cybernetic augmentation, and reproductive engineering.
Although viewed as eccentric by many urban Zelmoks, they are generally respected for preserving cultural traditions that might otherwise disappear.
ANCIENT LEGENDS
Relations with the Nyokai
Among the oldest Zelmok legends are stories of terrifying creatures that descended from the stars long before humanity developed civilization.
According to folklore, these beings abducted countless Zelmoks, conducted horrific biological experiments, and even consumed their victims. Modern historians cannot fully verify these accounts.
However, after humanity's encounters with the Nyokai, many scholars quietly acknowledged that the ancient legends may have described the same species.
This shared history helps explain why many Zelmoks admire Sharra Zul'Elkoen's resistance against the Nyokai and why cooperation between humans and Zelmoks has steadily strengthened.
THE PUBLIC VIEW
Reputation
Throughout Consortium space, Zelmoks enjoy a reputation for honesty, careful planning, and extraordinary commercial competence. They rarely act impulsively and are famous for remembering contracts, trade routes, and financial records decades after first encountering them.
Among humans, a common saying has emerged:
If a Zelmok shakes your hand, the paperwork is just a formality.
Whether that reputation is entirely deserved depends on which Zelmok one asks.
