PILLAR II — SCIENCE

Engine and Propulsion Tech

Propulsion & Power-Plant Doctrine

From the Consortium Civilian Freight Doctrine, the propulsion and power technologies can be isolated cleanly into two categories. This record is kept strictly to what the document establishes.

FEATURED OVERVIEW

Gorbillian Transportation Overview

The complete technical record of Gorbillian drive theory, the Vessel Propulsive Performance Scale, higher-spatial transit, and the full propulsion family registry.

Propulsion Technologies

Most interstellar freighters use a Gorbillian drive for interstellar transit plus separate conventional propulsion, rather than expecting the Gorbillian system to handle every phase of flight.

TechnologyEstablished Function
Gorbillian DrivePrimary propulsion for interstellar transit on most freighters.
Prometheus Generation 4.3+ Controlled-Fusion Thrusters (Promegen)Conventional propulsion used for local maneuvering, orbital operations, docking, and emergency control.
Ion ThrustersCommon secondary/conventional propulsion. The document does not further define their performance or preferred application.
Proton anti-Proton (PAP) DrivesUsed on specialized high-performance vessels.
Quantum Vacuum (QV) ThrustersOptional propulsion used where appropriate for maneuvering and station-keeping.

Engine / Power-Plant Technologies

TechnologyEstablished Function
Deuterium-Tritium Controlled Fusion PlantThe normal primary electrical power source aboard commercial vessels.
Controlled Fission SystemMay be retained on smaller ships for auxiliary or emergency electrical generation.
Multiple Separated Generation UnitsLarge freighters commonly distribute their generating systems physically so that one casualty cannot simultaneously eliminate propulsion, life support, navigation, and shield power.

Propulsion vs. Power Generation

There is an important distinction in the doctrine. Propulsion follows the order Gorbillian → Promegen → Ion → PAP → QV. Power generation follows Deuterium-Tritium controlled fusion as the primary source, with controlled fission as backup or auxiliary. Promegen is somewhat unusual because it bridges the categories: it is a propulsion technology whose thrusters themselves operate through controlled fusion, whereas the separate D-T fusion plants are explicitly the ship's electrical power plants.
