The Universal Personal Communications Ring
THE DEVICE
Overview
The modroei is the single most important personal device in human civilization. Worn as a ring on any finger, it functions as communicator, identification credential, computer terminal, payment device, navigation assistant, translator, medical monitor, and secure authentication system.
Few citizens leave home without one. While primitive handheld phones disappeared centuries earlier, the modroei has become so integrated into daily life that many citizens jokingly say losing one is like losing part of themselves.
HARDWARE
Physical Description
At first glance, a modroei appears to be an elegant metallic ring.
Closer inspection reveals an astonishing feat of engineering.
The ring contains trillions of microscopic components embedded within dozens of nanometer-scale circuitry layers. Advances in molecular manufacturing allow processors, memory, antennas, optical projectors, environmental sensors, and power-management systems to occupy a volume little larger than a traditional wedding band.
The electronics are protected beneath an exceptionally durable transparent crystalline coating that resists scratches, corrosion, radiation, and vacuum exposure.
Most models weigh less than ten grams.
DAILY USE
Everyday Functions
Nearly every interaction with modern civilization passes through a modroei.
Common functions include:
- voice communication
- live video conversations
- holographic image projection
- personal identification
- secure financial transactions using utz
- navigation
- scheduling
- translation between hundreds of human and alien languages
- biometric health monitoring
- emergency distress signaling
- access control for buildings, spacecraft, and vehicles
- authentication for government and military systems
On vessels such as the Morningstar, the ring serves as each passenger's primary interface with the ship's network, allowing users to communicate, navigate, and access onboard services from virtually anywhere aboard.
CONNECTIVITY
Communications
Most modroei communicate using extremely efficient short-range communication fields.
Rather than relying on traditional radio alone, they dynamically select among optical transmission, local wireless mesh networks, and highly compressed directional communication depending on the environment.
Under ordinary circumstances, a modroei communicates effortlessly throughout:
- an entire starship
- a large space station
- a planetary city
- a lunar colony
- most inhabited regions of a moon
The device automatically hands off communications between local network nodes without the wearer noticing.
HIGH-END
Quantum Communication Models
The most advanced commercial and military models incorporate limited quantum communication technology.
These devices employ miniature quantum-linked components inspired by the much larger Q-Com systems used aboard military vessels and major communications facilities.
Because the quantum circuitry inside a modroei is extraordinarily small, its capabilities remain limited compared with dedicated Q-Com installations.
High-end models can occasionally establish secure links beyond the local communication network, allowing direct communication with compatible devices located on nearby worlds or spacecraft when appropriate relay infrastructure exists.
Such links are slower, consume considerably more power, and are less reliable than dedicated Q-Com systems.
For this reason, long-distance communications across star systems continue to depend upon full-sized quantum communication arrays rather than personal rings.
DISPLAY
Holographic Projection
One of the modroei's most recognizable features is its ability to project three-dimensional holographic interfaces.

Users may display:
- maps
- engineering schematics
- medical scans
- books
- entertainment
- incoming callers
- educational material
When receiving a call, many users choose to project a life-sized image of the person speaking, creating the impression that both individuals occupy the same room.
SOFTWARE
Artificial Intelligence
Every modroei contains an intelligent digital assistant.
Unlike a senticom, this assistant is not self-aware.
It serves as a highly advanced software interface capable of:
- organizing information
- anticipating user needs
- searching enormous databases
- providing navigation
- monitoring health
- translating conversations
- operating connected equipment
Over years of use, the assistant learns its owner's habits and preferences, allowing interactions to become increasingly natural.
PROTECTION
Security
Each modroei is permanently linked to its registered owner through multiple biometric systems.
Authentication may include:
- fingerprint mapping
- skin conductivity
- vascular patterns
- body chemistry
- neural response signatures
Unauthorized users generally cannot access personal data or financial accounts.
If stolen, the ring can automatically erase sensitive information and notify Consortium authorities or the registered owner.
VARIANTS
Professional Models
Different professions employ specialized versions.
Civilian
Designed for everyday communication and commerce.
Engineering
Includes diagnostic interfaces capable of directly communicating with spacecraft systems and industrial equipment.
Medical
Provides continuous patient monitoring, drug interaction analysis, and emergency diagnostic tools.
Scientific
Optimized for laboratory instrumentation and field research.
Military
Constructed with hardened electronics, encrypted communications, electromagnetic shielding, battlefield mapping, and secure tactical networking. Military models can continue functioning after conditions that would disable most civilian units.
SOCIETY
Cultural Importance
Children often receive their first modroei during adolescence as a symbolic step toward independence.
Business agreements, friendships, and even romantic relationships commonly begin with the exchange of freqnumos—the unique communication frequency associated with each individual's ring.
Many citizens personalize their modroei with distinctive metals, gemstones, engravings, or holographic effects, making the ring both a practical device and a reflection of personal identity.
Among the people of the Lurran Consortium, the modroei has become more than a communication tool. It is the constant technological companion of everyday life—a device so indispensable that life without one feels almost unimaginable.
