Senticom

Iodva is the senticom associated with the enormous Darnell Cruise Lines vessel Morningstar. She functions as far more than the ship's computer: she is a conscious digital person who can manifest through a holographic avatar and participate directly in conversations with passengers and crew.

In Gretchen, Captain Herkles summons her into a meeting, where she appears as a slender woman in the white, black, and gold Darnell uniform and provides detailed analysis of the organism attached to the Morningstar. The text explicitly calls her a “sentient communicator.”

Iodva's personality is deliberately humanlike. She can converse, explain information, make judgments, and interact socially rather than merely respond as a computer interface. Her chosen physical appearance can also change because her body is a holographic representation rather than biological anatomy. She is one of the clearest examples of how senticoms blur the social distinction between biological and digital people.

Giorodva, commonly called Gio, is the senticom who accompanies the CSV Gulliver expedition. She voluntarily integrates herself into the Gulliver's operating network and is considered a cooperating mission specialist, rather than equipment.

Her integration allows her to maintain continuous awareness of numerous ship systems, including navigation, communications, atmospheric conditions, life support, laboratory alarms, exterior sensors, and internal safety systems. This gives her a fundamentally different experience of the expedition from that of the biological crew: she can effectively remain awake and attentive while everyone else sleeps.

Gio normally communicates through a humanlike holographic manifestation. The expedition material establishes her as personable enough that Marissa notes how easy it is to forget that someone is effectively awake aboard the ship at all times.

Treodva, usually called Tre, is a recurring senticom associated particularly with Li-Ming Phan and The Sand Witch. He is a speaking character rather than a passive computer interface.

Tre is heavily involved in interpreting information and helping biological characters understand technological and environmental situations. His storyline also demonstrates just how unconventional a senticom's existence can become: at one point Tre copies his consciousness into Li-Ming's mind after uncovering evidence concerning the catastrophe involving the meraphytes.

Tre subsequently appears in the connected Trans Porter Ada material. There, Li-Ming explicitly explains that Tre and Jeni were senticoms from the beginning, reinforcing that neither is simply an AI assistant that later achieved consciousness.

Jeniodva, usually called Jeni, is another senticom associated with Li-Ming's storyline and Tre. She participates in conversations as an individual rather than functioning as silent technological equipment.

Jeni and Tre can independently analyze evidence and communicate their conclusions to Li-Ming. Their presence together is particularly useful for establishing that senticoms are not a single standardized personality. They are individual digital people capable of forming their own interpretations and participating in events alongside humans.

The sources currently establish considerably less biographical information about Jeni than about Iodva, Gio, or Tre. Canon does not currently establish enough detail to justify inventing a more elaborate personal history for her.

KAMAU is the senticom created or developed by Jassalor Omondi and associated with SIAGE operations aboard the Morningstar. His name expands to Knowledge Application and Manifestation Assisting Unit.

KAMAU manifests holographically as an older human male wearing a SIAGE uniform. His presentation includes deliberately old-fashioned touches, such as a clipboard and stylus. Jassalor describes KAMAU essentially as his version of Iodva for SIAGE's facilities aboard the Morningstar.

The story directly identifies KAMAU as a senticom. Other characters discuss transferring his security clearance to “another senticom,” and he is explicitly referred to as “the senticom.”

Hank is a senticom appearing in the Trans Porter Ada material, particularly in a medical context. He interacts with Ada at the Peter Quince Medical Center, discussing her treatment, including genetically tailored replacement lungs, damage caused by SKIN-E, and related medical and insurance issues.

Unlike some senticoms whose identity is obvious from their names, Hank has an entirely ordinary human name. His nature is nevertheless made explicit when Ada tells him, “you're a fucking senticom!” and terminates the session, causing Hank to disappear.

Hank is important to the broader lore because he demonstrates that senticoms are not restricted to spacecraft or general-purpose information systems. They can occupy specialized professional roles and interact with humans in environments such as medicine.
