THE CLASSROOM
From the Science Classroom
Teacher Steven U. Allen is a career science educator. Before a single page of the Zul'Elkoen Universe was written, he was already asking the questions a good science teacher asks every day: what evidence supports this? and what happens if one variable changes? Those habits carry directly into his fiction, where alien biology, disease, and technology are treated as systems that follow rules rather than as decoration.
He is certified by the State of Florida Department of Education to teach Biology and Physics, Grades 6–12, and has completed Cambridge International professional development coursework in AICE Environmental Management and AICE Physics — the same advanced curricula he has taught to secondary students.
THE BIOLOGIST
A Biology Foundation
Teacher Steven U. Allen holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Florida International University. His undergraduate coursework included genetics, ecology, general and organic chemistry, plant physiology and vascular plant morphology, general parasitology, primate biology, animal physiology, and zoology — the same foundations that show up whenever the Zul'Elkoen Universe classifies a new species or explains how one survives in its environment.
That coursework in classification and comparative biology is a direct ancestor of the Species archive, where each civilization is described with attention to physiology, reproduction, diet, and adaptation rather than treated as a single interchangeable "alien race."
THE EPIDEMIOLOGIST
Public Health & Epidemiology
Beyond biology, Teacher Steven U. Allen holds a Master of Public Health and a Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology, also from Florida International University. His graduate coursework covered infectious disease epidemiology, health behavior, health demography, environmental health management, biostatistics, and the public health aspects of food-related disease.
That training in how disease spreads through a population — and how institutions respond to it — is the same lens applied to the Medodva diseases of the Zul'Elkoen Universe and to the medical technology that responds to them. Public health thinking treats an outbreak as a system with causes, vectors, and consequences — precisely how disease is handled in the Nexus rather than as a simple plot device.
THE CREDENTIAL
Certified to Teach Biology and Physics
The Florida Department of Education has certified Teacher Steven U. Allen to teach Professional Biology, Grades 6–12 and Professional Physics, Grades 6–12. Holding certification in both subjects is part of why his fiction moves comfortably between living systems and physical systems — a starship's propulsion and an alien organism's metabolism are approached with the same demand for internal consistency.
LEARNING BY DOING
Teaching Classification Through Fiction
Teacher Steven U. Allen's approach to education is that competence is demonstrated, not recited — a philosophy visible directly in the site's Cladogram Challenge, where readers practice building phylogenetic trees using DNA evidence rather than simply reading about how classification works. The same philosophy runs through the Education systems of the Zul'Elkoen Universe, where characters learn by observing, testing, and applying knowledge under pressure.
