The Queen of Ferries is one of the Consortium's major civilian passenger-transportation companies. Despite the company's whimsical name and its use of the word train, its vehicles are spacecraft.
A passenger might take a Ferry Queen train from a planet to one of its moons, from one inhabited planet to another planet orbiting the same star, from an orbital habitat to an asteroid settlement, or between moons of a gas giant. The company does not provide transportation from one star system to another. This makes TQOTF fundamentally different from interstellar cruise and transportation companies.
CEO — Onequia Kramer
Onequia Kramer, approximately sixty years old, is the CEO of The Queen of Ferries. She is a pale-skinned human woman with red hair and green eyes. Kramer comes from a politically connected Consortium family: her grandfather holds a seat on one of the Consortium's Pillar councils.
That relationship inevitably produces accusations that Ferry Queen enjoys privileged access to government officials. Her grandfather's exact Pillar and position remain unestablished.
Kramer is known throughout the transportation industry simply as "the Queen." This is an informal nickname rather than an official corporate title.
The Monarch System
TQOTF does not centrally manage every train from a single headquarters. Each star system containing Ferry Queen operations constitutes a Monarchy. The senior TQOTF executive responsible for that system is called its Monarch.

The title is deliberately gender-neutral. Thus, Onequia Kramer is the company's CEO — the "Queen" — while individual systems have their own Monarchs.
Operating Network
The current star charts establish Consortium, Consortium–Squelgian, and Consortium–Zelmok administrative categories — shared administrative authority with the Squelgian government or, under the Consortium–Zelmok Treaty, with the Zelmok administration. The proposed initial Ferry Queen network:

Ferry Train Technology
Because Ferry Queen vehicles never travel between stars, they do not need Gorbillian drives. That gives TQOTF an enormous economic advantage. The Freighter Doctrine establishes several technologies suitable for local propulsion — Promegen, ion thrusters, PAP drives, and Quantum Vacuum thrusters — and D-T fusion as the normal electrical power source with controlled fission as an auxiliary/emergency option. Ferry Queen standardizes around three propulsion systems plus its power plants.
Promegen
Prometheus Generation 4.3+ controlled-fusion thrusters are the workhorses of the fleet. They handle major acceleration and deceleration and are especially useful for long planetary transfers and heavy trains.
Quantum Vacuum Thrusters
QV thrusters provide precision control, extensively used during docking, station keeping, coupling and uncoupling cars, terminal approaches, orbital adjustment, and fine maneuvering.
Ion Propulsion
Ion engines are installed primarily for economical cruise and low-priority operations where acceleration is less important than efficiency.
PAP
Proton anti-Proton drives are reserved for Ferry Queen's fastest trains. They are expensive to operate and maintain, making them inappropriate for ordinary commuter service.
Power Plants
The normal Ferry Queen train uses deuterium-tritium controlled fusion for electrical generation. Larger trains have multiple physically separated fusion-generation units, borrowing the redundancy philosophy established for Consortium freighters. Controlled fission generators are retained on some trains as emergency systems.

Sprite Class — Local/Commuter

Sprites operate routes such as orbital station → moon, moon → asteroid habitat, or short planet → moon transfers. This is Ferry Queen's economy service.

The Fairy is the company's signature train and includes the family to which Fairy 263 belongs. This is the normal Ferry Queen experience.

Crowns commonly transport wealthy passengers, celebrities, corporate executives, government personnel and travelers willing to pay for substantially reduced transit time.
ICIA and Private Security
Ferry Queen has an unusual institutional relationship with ICIA rather than KAVOE. KAVOE remains responsible for military threats and major emergencies, but Ferry Queen treats ordinary passenger security primarily as a law-enforcement problem: smuggling, kidnapping, organized crime, sabotage, passenger violence, trafficking and piracy.
ICIA therefore receives advance security information for Ferry Queen departures and may place personnel aboard or assign an escort when warranted. Commercial escorts can supplement ICIA.

The last three contractors are new suggestions, not previously established canon. Unlike the Ferry itself, escort vessels may be armed where legally licensed.
Passenger Security
Ferry Queen operates much more like an airport than a modern railroad when it comes to security. Weapons are prohibited aboard passenger trains — even when the passenger could legally possess the weapon elsewhere.
Before boarding, passengers undergo identity verification and noninvasive scanning for weapons, explosives, dangerous biological agents and prohibited materials. Reservations are checked against criminal and security databases; background screening is largely automated, with unusual results referred to human security personnel or ICIA.
A serious criminal history does not automatically mean someone cannot travel. Instead, Ferry Queen uses a risk-based system. A person wanted by authorities, subject to a transportation restriction, or identified as an immediate security threat can be denied boarding and referred to ICIA.
- Cargo and luggage are scanned independently.
- Access between operational and passenger areas is electronically controlled.
- Cockpits, engineering spaces, power-generation compartments and environmental-control areas cannot normally be entered by passengers.
- The train's computer continuously checks passenger movement, access attempts, atmospheric conditions, hull integrity, propulsion status and unusual electronic activity.
Maintenance and Safety
Ferry Queen's safety reputation depends heavily on scheduled maintenance. The established Consortium commercial maintenance framework is adapted to passenger service — with a more aggressive propulsion inspection interval because the company transports people rather than replaceable cargo.

An abnormal event — collision, major shield failure, unusual PAP event, reactor problem, suspected sabotage, hull contamination, extreme acceleration event or serious propulsion malfunction — automatically removes the train from passenger service until it is recertified. Maintenance records follow the vehicle, not the captain or Monarch; changing systems, crews or ownership cannot erase the maintenance history.
The Central Operating Philosophy
Interstellar travel gets you to the star system. Ferry Queen gets you around once you're there.
That gives the company an excellent niche in the Zul'Elkoen economy. A traveler arriving in Sol aboard an interstellar vessel doesn't necessarily charter another spacecraft to get from Titania to Titan, Luna, Mars, an asteroid settlement or another destination. They buy a ticket on a Ferry.
And that makes the old terminology from Trans Porter Ada work especially well: these spacecraft really are trains in cultural terms. They have cars, porters, dining service, scheduled departures, numbered vehicles and stations. The rails simply disappeared centuries ago.
