There is a point in every expedition when the photographs stop looking like a holiday and begin looking like evidence. Lacaille 9352 was that point. The Gulliver was still functioning well, GIORODVA was still cheerful, Patrick was still incapable of allowing silence to remain silence, and Rick still believed he had been hired for the easiest security contract of his life. But the field sites were becoming less forgiving.

The first thing to bite them was a flying organism about the length of a thumbnail. The second thing to bite them was smaller. The third did not technically bite. It attached itself to the back of Jules's neck and inserted three hair-thin feeding structures. Myriyam removed it before Jules noticed.

Rick: "Doctor, for the record, none of those are pirates." Marissa: "Thank you, Rick."

The Gas Giant That Wasn't Empty

The gas giant in Lacaille 9352 changed the expedition. They had expected biology in the upper atmospheric bands. What they did not expect was continuity. Probes found life in layer after layer as pressure increased and visible light collapsed.

At the highest sampled altitude, broad translucent Quoisol floaters rode convection cells. Beneath them were grazing organisms with gas-filled chambers and rows of gripping mouthparts. Farther down, where direct starlight was negligible, chemical producers dominated. They harvested disequilibria in sulfur-, hydrogen-, and metal-bearing compounds carried upward by storms. Filter feeders trailed membranes hundreds of meters behind compact central bodies.

The deepest successful probe returned data from an environment none of them would willingly enter. Pressure was immense. Light was functionally absent. Yet the camera showed a living wall of pale branching structures attached to mineral-rich condensate masses. Between the branches moved black, flattened organisms that appeared to graze bacterial films.

"No surface." Quincy. "The whole food web. It doesn't need a surface." "Write that down." Marissa. "Already recorded." GIORODVA.

That sentence became one of the most important notes of the survey: a biosphere does not require ground. It requires persistent energy, usable matter, and enough stability for biological relationships to endure.

Amphitrite The First Confrontation

Amphitrite gave the expedition its first ground confrontation. Three men approached the sampling station claiming to be independent mineral assessors. Eduardo disliked them before they finished introducing themselves. GIORODVA quietly informed Marissa that one visitor had attempted to query the field network with an unregistered device.

Eduardo stepped between the visitors and the equipment. One reached inside his jacket. Eduardo caught the wrist, turned him into the mud, and Rick had the second man against a sample case before Marissa had processed the movement. The third ran. Local authorities collected all three after GIORODVA transmitted the recording.

Rick, afterward: "I would like the record to show that I was briefly not bored." Eduardo: "I would like the record to show that you talked too much during it."
