Unit History
The Vadune Registry and formation histories of KAVOE's first ten brigade-equivalent ground formations — their victories, defeats, rescues, and heraldry from 2130 to 2380.
A Vadune is a brigade-equivalent ground formation of approximately 3,200 personnel, normally commanded by a Thalon (O-4). Planetary Vadunes are combined-force formations whose exact composition varies by mission, world, and threat environment. Unit numbers are permanent identifiers that remain with a formation when reassigned, allowing individual Vadunes to accumulate distinct institutional histories over time.
1st Vadune — The First Guard
SYMBOL: UNICORN · MOTTO: FIRST TO STAND.
The unicorn represents courage, rarity, determination, and a fierce protective instinct. The single horn reinforces the identity of the 1st Vadune: one point, one purpose, first to stand.
VICTORY
Operation Harbor Shield: Repelled the Kestrel Reach pirate flotilla after three pirate landing sites were established outside Tyche's primary spaceport.
DISASTER RESPONSE
Tyche Riftquake: Evacuated more than 40,000 civilians from unstable coastal arcologies after a major tectonic event.
DEFEAT
Quolesh Contact at Morrow Plain: A reconnaissance Sovel was ambushed by Quolesh ground forces. Sixty-three personnel were lost before the formation disengaged.
VICTORY
Battle of Seven Depots: Defeated a coordinated pirate attempt to seize military fuel, medical stores, and communications equipment at seven separate facilities on Tyche.
MAJOR RESCUE
Damaris Descent Disaster: Responded when the passenger liner Damaris broke apart during atmospheric descent. The 1st recovered 6,800 passengers and crew; 312 people died.
2nd Vadune — The Watchers
SYMBOL: EYE · MOTTO: WE SEE FIRST.
The eye represents vigilance, reconnaissance, detection, search operations, and the tradition of finding dangers and missing people before others do.
RESCUE
Ananke Survey Crisis: Located and recovered a missing 117-person geological expedition after twelve days in an electrically active canyon network.
VICTORY
Battle of Orison Ridge: Defeated a large pirate force attempting to capture Ananke's northern communications array.
DEFEAT / UNKNOWN CONTACT
KX-44: Patrols encountered unidentified nonhuman combatants using coordinated projectile weapons. Two Vareks were effectively destroyed before the 2nd withdrew. The species was never identified.
DISASTER RESPONSE
Greenfall Floods: Evacuated river settlements during a continent-scale flood and maintained support for nine weeks.
VICTORY
Quolesh Skirmish at Narvik Basin: Captured intact enemy communications equipment and prevented the force from reaching a nearby settlement.
3rd Vadune — The Iron Third
SYMBOL: ANVIL · MOTTO: STILL STANDING.
The anvil represents engineering, endurance, rebuilding, and the ability to absorb punishment without collapsing.
RESCUE
Eris Foundry Explosion: Engineering units entered a collapsing industrial complex and rescued approximately 1,900 trapped workers.
COSTLY VICTORY
Pirate Siege of Aster Gate: Held a damaged orbital-elevator ground terminal for four days. The terminal remained in KAVOE hands, but the 3rd suffered 286 casualties.
MIXED / LEIRTH BATTLE
Khepri Flats: An initial armored assault failed and the 3rd lost most of a Talion's heavy vehicles. Revised tactics eventually forced the Leirth from the region.
DISASTER RESPONSE
Operation Stonebridge: Rebuilt transport corridors and defensive shelters after severe earthquakes on Eris. More than 72,000 civilians remained supplied.
MIXED / QUOLESH
Cinder Step: Held a mining settlement against a Quolesh probe force but could not prevent the destruction of two major extraction complexes.
4th Vadune — Harmonia Guard
SYMBOL: FOUR TOWERS · MOTTO: EVERY CITY STANDS.
The four connected towers recall the Night of Four Stations and symbolize the unit's urban-defense mission and protection of interconnected civilian systems.
MAJOR EVACUATION
Harmonia Cyclone Season: Moved more than 180,000 civilians from three coastal cities before a hypercane made landfall.
MIXED
Night of Four Stations: Pirate sabotage teams struck transportation, power, medical, and communications facilities simultaneously. The 4th contained all four attacks but lost the central fusion-distribution station for eleven hours.
VICTORY / UNKNOWN CONTACT
Leto Junction: Hostile nonhuman beings emerged from subterranean caverns. The 4th evacuated civilians and destroyed the immediate threat.
VICTORY
Battle of Selene District: Defeated a heavily armed pirate occupation force after six days of block-by-block urban fighting.
MIXED / QUOLESH RAID
Harmonia: Prevented Quolesh forces from seizing the planetary command center but lost the eastern aerospace field.
5th Vadune — The Victors
SYMBOL: FIVE-PEAKED MOUNTAIN · MOTTO: REACH THE SUMMIT.
The mountain represents endurance, difficult terrain, long-range operations, and overcoming severe obstacles — perseverance rather than an assumption of being undefeated.
RESCUE
Nike Mountain Disaster: Recovered approximately 3,400 civilians and industrial workers isolated by avalanches and volcanic ash.
VICTORY
Battle of Red Quarry: Destroyed a pirate ground force attempting to seize rare-metal stockpiles.
DEFEAT / LEIRTH
Three Moons: Won two early engagements but was decisively defeated in the third after a Leirth counterattack severed the 5th's logistics corridor. 411 personnel were killed or missing.
RESCUE
Operation Long March: Moved more than 1,100 kilometers over storm-damaged terrain to deliver medical supplies after aircraft were grounded.
VICTORY
Pirate War of the Nike Belt: Led a sequence of ground and asteroid-station assaults that dismantled a long-running pirate network.
6th Vadune — The Scholars
SYMBOL: OPEN BOOK AND STAR · MOTTO: KNOWLEDGE PROTECTS.
The book represents accumulated knowledge; the star represents knowledge not yet acquired. Together they symbolize science, research security, xenobiology, containment, and exploration.
CONTAINMENT / LOSS
Thalia Laboratory Breach: Contained an accidental biological release and evacuated 8,700 personnel. Thirty-four KAVOE members died during containment.
MAJOR RESCUE
Expedition Aurelia: Recovered a science team trapped beneath a collapsing ice shelf after six days. All 214 researchers survived.
UNKNOWN HOSTILE CONTACT
Event T-91: An unidentified intelligent organism attacked a remote xenobiology site. The 6th destroyed the attackers but lost 52 personnel and the entire forward research archive.
STRATEGIC VICTORY
Meridian Lab: Prevented Quolesh forces from capturing experimental sensor technology. The complex was deliberately demolished rather than surrendered.
MAJOR EVACUATION
Thalia Plague Emergency: Moved nearly 96,000 civilians through controlled quarantine corridors during a fast-moving pathogen crisis.
7th Vadune — The Frontier Guard
SYMBOL: LANTERN · MOTTO: LIGHT AT THE FRONTIER.
The lantern represents isolated settlements, darkness, frontier service, search operations, and the idea that the 7th may be the only KAVOE force available when disaster strikes far from major support.
DISASTER RESPONSE
Aglaea Dustfire: Fought continent-spanning wildfires while evacuating scattered frontier settlements. Twenty-seven isolated communities were saved.
DEFEAT / UNKNOWN CONTACT
Hollow Sky: An unknown hostile alien craft landed beyond sensor coverage. A Varek patrol was nearly destroyed in first contact. The surviving aliens escaped before identification.
VICTORY
Pirate Winter Campaign: Fought dispersed pirate bands across three settlements for five months, ultimately eliminating the network.
RESCUE WITH HEAVY LOSS
Grey Lantern: A transport carrying 2,600 colonists crashed in a polar wilderness. The 7th rescued 2,311 people; 289 died.
VICTORY / LEIRTH
Farwatch: Delayed a Leirth landing force long enough for civilians to evacuate, then counterattacked and retook the settlement.
8th Vadune — The Far Guard
SYMBOL: COMPASS STAR · MOTTO: DISTANCE DOES NOT DIVIDE US.
The compass star represents navigation, distant deployment, isolation, logistical endurance, and finding the way home. Personnel may informally call it the Far Star.
RESCUE
Astraeus Convoy Disaster: Crossed more than 600 kilometers through severe atmospheric storms to reach survivors of three crashed cargo landers and recovered 1,040 people.
VICTORY
Battle of Glass Harbor: Defeated a large pirate assault on Astraeus's principal spaceport after two days of fighting.
MAJOR DEFEAT / QUOLESH
Yarrow Station: Was surprised by a Quolesh force while protecting an off-world logistics station. The station was lost and 318 KAVOE personnel were killed or captured.
MAJOR EVACUATION
Astraeus Superstorm: Evacuated more than 120,000 civilians from lowland settlements before a planetwide storm surge.
VICTORY
Operation Broken Spear: Conducted a long-range counter-piracy campaign. Seven installations were captured or destroyed.
9th Vadune — The Shield Nine
SYMBOL: SHIELD · MOTTO: BEHIND US, THEY LIVE.
The shield represents what survives behind the unit rather than what the unit destroys. The nine studs make the simplified shield unmistakably associated with the 9th Vadune.
DISASTER RESPONSE
Eunomia Crustquake: Protected evacuation corridors and restored water and power to major settlements after a catastrophic seismic event.
VICTORY
Battle of the Western Arcologies: Repelled pirate occupation forces from three population centers after eleven days of fighting.
MIXED / LEIRTH
Carthage Field: Successfully defended the civilian evacuation zone but failed to hold the nearby aerospace base, which was destroyed.
MAJOR RESCUE
Orpheus Habitat Disaster: Coordinated emergency support for more than 31,000 evacuees after orbital habitats entered decaying trajectories. Fewer than 200 lives were lost.
DEFEAT WITH EXTRACTION
Vesper-6: An unidentified armored species attacked a remote listening post. The 9th recovered surviving personnel but abandoned the installation.
10th Vadune — The Long Reach
SYMBOL: OUTSTRETCHED HAND · MOTTO: NO ONE BEYOND OUR REACH.
The hand represents reaching distant worlds, pulling survivors to safety, helping allied species, and extending KAVOE protection far beyond Lurra. It also commemorates the unit's tradition of enormous evacuation operations.
RESCUE
Euphrosyne Mine Collapse: Rescued approximately 5,600 trapped workers during a cascading subsurface collapse.
VICTORY
Joint Defense of Silicate Basin: KAVOE and Erthuzian forces defeated a pirate army attempting to seize mining and transport infrastructure.
MIXED / QUOLESH
Perseid Reach: Fought three major ground actions. The 10th won the first and third but suffered severe losses in the second when a Quolesh force overran its forward command post.
VICTORY / LEIRTH
Nine Ridges: After an initial retreat, reorganized with allied forces and drove the Leirth from a chain of fortified mining settlements after five weeks of fighting.
MAJOR EVACUATION
The Long Reach Evacuation: Moved approximately 210,000 civilians to safe zones over nineteen days — the largest successful evacuation in the 10th Vadune's history.
