OVERVIEW
The Controlled Breath Hold is one of six PAT events. Under the revised PAT architecture, each event has a normal maximum of 30 points, producing a 180-point standard PAT maximum. The Breath Hold uses separate male and female performance thresholds, with the female benchmark approximately 30 percent less demanding. A candidate must qualify in this event independently; performance in another PAT event cannot compensate for a failed breath hold.

01Standard Performance Anchors
Ten points is the proposed minimum passing score for the Breath Hold. Thirty points represents maximum standard performance. These anchors preserve the previously developed 30-second male / 21-second female minimum and 90-second male / 63-second female maximum-standard benchmarks.
02Standard-Scale Point Progression
For males, the 30-to-90-second standard band spans 60 seconds across 20 scoring points. Therefore, every additional three completed seconds above 30 seconds earns one additional point. Examples are 30 seconds = 10 points, 33 = 11, 36 = 12, 45 = 15, 60 = 20, 75 = 25, and 90 = 30. For females, the corresponding performance threshold is approximately 70 percent of the male time. This produces an average increment of about 2.1 seconds per point. For Base44 implementation, the female threshold can be generated from the male threshold using Female Threshold = Male Threshold × 0.70, with display values rounded consistently.
03Extended Performance Scale (EPS)
Performance beyond the 30-point standard ceiling earns Extended Performance Scale points. EPS points intentionally become progressively harder to earn so that an extraordinary breath holder cannot dominate the overall six-event PAT solely through one specialty. The scoring philosophy is rapid progression through operational development followed by diminishing returns after maximum-standard performance.
04What the Event Measures
The Controlled Breath Hold measures respiratory reserve, composure, rising carbon-dioxide tolerance, heart-rate control, and the ability to resist panic when normal breathing is temporarily unavailable. KAVOE considers these capabilities relevant to damaged life-support systems, smoke or contaminant exposure, emergency pressure transitions, submerged escape, and situations in which breathing equipment must temporarily be conserved. The event is not intended simply to identify swimmers or competitive breath-hold specialists. It tests whether a candidate remains controlled and physiologically functional while experiencing respiratory discomfort. Marine-trained personnel often perform strongly because they have experience controlling respiration while physically stressed.
05Training Guidance
Preparation should emphasize progressive supervised breath-control work, aerobic conditioning, calm exhalation control, and supervised aquatic respiratory exercises. Candidates should improve respiratory efficiency and psychological composure rather than relying on unsafe maximal-hold attempts. Marine rescue conditioning can be especially useful because it combines breath control with operational movement and stress. General cardiovascular conditioning and normal KAVOE SWORT remain useful supporting preparation. Unsupervised extreme breath-hold practice is not an approved KOTA preparation method.
06Safety and Scoring Rules
The recorded score is based on the last full second completed while the candidate remains conscious, responsive, and medically stable. Loss of consciousness invalidates the attempt rather than increasing the score. Candidates are medically monitored during official testing. The safety rule prevents dangerous competitive behavior from becoming advantageous and reinforces that the PAT measures operational readiness rather than willingness to accept preventable injury.
07Development Status
This document records the current proposed Breath Hold scoring framework. The overall PAT 180-point architecture and EPS concept are established working directions, while the exact second-by-second female rounding rule and any EPS levels beyond 38 points remain open for later development. No additional breath-hold thresholds should be invented by Base44 unless they are subsequently supplied in an approved KOTA source.
