Sustained functional strength: holding a 25-pound iron block overhead against muscular failure.
OVERVIEW
The candidate lifts and holds a standardized 25-pound (approximately 11.34 kg) iron block overhead. The same nominal block mass is used for male and female candidates; sex-specific performance standards are created through required holding duration rather than different block masses. The official holding time determines the event score. The candidate must maintain the block inside the prescribed overhead control envelope for the entire scored interval.

01Nanotube Safety Tether
The iron block remains attached to an overhead nanotube safety tether throughout the event. During a valid hold the tether is passive and provides no meaningful lifting assistance or reduction of the block's effective load. If the candidate suddenly releases the block, loses control, or the block exits the authorized holding envelope, the tether engages and expands progressively, absorbing the downward movement so the block descends slowly rather than falling freely onto the candidate. The safety system is designed to permit candidates to approach muscular failure without converting a sudden release into a preventable impact injury. Tether engagement ends the scored hold immediately.
02What the Event Measures
The Heavy Iron Block Overhead Hold measures sustained functional strength rather than the ability to perform a single heavy lift. It assesses shoulder and scapular stability, grip, trunk rigidity, postural control, muscular endurance, and the ability to maintain useful force as fatigue accumulates. The event represents tasks such as stabilizing damaged equipment, supporting a hatch or structural component, manipulating heavy machinery, assisting a casualty, or holding equipment in position while another Lancer works. Because the block itself is only 25 pounds, the difficulty comes from maintaining correct overhead control for an extended period rather than from maximal lifting strength.
03Standard 10–30 Point Scale
The minimum qualifying standard remains 30 seconds for males and 21 seconds for females, earning 10 points. Maximum standard performance is now substantially more demanding: a male candidate must hold the block for 180 seconds (3 minutes) to earn 30 points, while the corresponding female 30-point threshold is 126 seconds (2 minutes 6 seconds). For males, every additional 7.5 seconds above the 30-second minimum earns one additional point. Female thresholds preserve the approximately 70-percent relationship to the male holding durations.
04Maximum Standard and Extended Performance
Thirty points is the normal maximum for the event and corresponds to 180 seconds for males and 126 seconds for females. The Heavy Iron Block Overhead Hold is intended to support an Extended Performance Scale because the nanotube tether substantially reduces the injury risk associated with sudden muscular failure. Exact thresholds above 30 points have not yet been established and must not be invented by Base44. When the extended scale is developed, additional points should become progressively harder to earn so extraordinary specialization in this event does not overwhelm the six-event PAT total.
05Valid Holding Position and Timing
The block must remain within a defined overhead control envelope throughout the attempt. The candidate may not rest the block on the head or body, reposition it into an unauthorized skeletal-support posture, or otherwise use the body or equipment to reduce the required muscular hold. Position sensors in the block and test station monitor block location and may also verify arm, torso, and foot-position requirements. The official timer stops at the instant the block leaves the permitted control envelope, the candidate deliberately releases it, or the nanotube tether engages. The resulting verified holding time is the value used to determine points.
06Training Guidance
Effective preparation includes overhead carries, presses, isometric overhead holds, shoulder-stability work, grip conditioning, trunk stabilization, and progressive resistance training. Candidates should gradually increase time under tension rather than repeatedly attempting maximum-duration holds. Heavy-gravity conditioning may improve performance for personnel with access to appropriate facilities, but ordinary resistance training and KAVOE SWORT can develop the capability needed to qualify. Training should emphasize stable posture and controlled breathing because inefficient alignment accelerates fatigue during a multi-minute hold. The event rewards sustained control, not simply the ability to force the block overhead once.
